The chamber choir Cantica laetitia was founded in Zlín in 2004, originally as a girls' ensemble selected from the children's choir Cantica. In this formation, it became one of the respected choral groups and received high accolades at competitions both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Since 2012, the choir has performed as a mixed ensemble and has continued its string of successes, including several Grand Prix awards. From its inception until 2022, the choir was led by Josef Surovík. In 2023, the leadership was taken over by Tereza Surovíková. In 2019, Cantica laetitia was designated as the academic choir of the Faculty of Technology at Tomas Bata University in Zlín.
The choir’s repertoire focuses primarily on 20th- and 21st-century music. Under the direction of Josef Surovík, the choir frequently performed works by both Czech and international composers (E. Whitacre, V. Miškinis, P. Eben, Z. Lukáš, T. Surovíková, among others), and also placed an emphasis on premiering new compositions. The quality of their performances was regularly recognized at competitions with awards for interpretation of specific pieces. Composer Jan Vičar arranged some of his works specifically for the ensemble, as did composer and current choirmaster Tereza Surovíková.
Currently, the choir is rebuilding with an entirely new membership base and a repertoire that respects and preserves its original artistic direction. This new formation of Cantica laetitia has been active since 2024.
